TikTok Live Updates Include Up to 5 People via Its Multi-Guest Feature

Starting Nov. 23, the minimum age to host will rise from 16 to 18

TikTok detailed updates to its TikTok Live option Monday.

The Multi-Guest feature was updated to enable hosts to go live with up to five guests, using a grid or panel layout.

Once a creator starts a live video, the three-dot menu in the upper-right-hand corner gives them options including flipping the camera, adding effects/stickers, filtering comments and adding moderators.

Starting Nov. 23, the minimum age to host a TikTok Live video will rise from 16 to 18, with the platform explaining in a blog post, “As we consider the breadth of our global audience, we already take a graduated approach to the features that our community can access based on their age; younger teens need to be aged 16 or older to access direct messaging and 18 or older to send virtual gifts or access monetization features.”

In the coming weeks, TikTok plans to introduce an option for creators to choose if they prefer only an adult audience for their live videos, with the company offering as examples, “Perhaps a comedy routine is better suited for people over age 18. Or, a host may plan to talk about a difficult life experience and they would feel more comfortable knowing the conversation is limited to adults.

Live creators on TikTok already have the option of using its keyword filtering tool to limit comments that may be inappropriate, and an updated version of this tool, set to roll out in the coming weeks, will send reminders to people and suggest keywords they might want to add to their filter lists.

TikTok said tests of this feature saw a near doubling of people using keyword filtering when viewing content from the most popular live creators.

The company wrote in its blog post, “TikTok is home to a diverse global ecosystem of people and culture—creators, communities and trends—all driving entertaining content and building connections. TikTok Live brings people together through content that entertains and inspires, providing creators an opportunity to show up as their most authentic selves as they forge meaningful connections and share a window into their lives with a global community—all in real time.”
